I decided that we should skip the “aperitivo” or the cocktails so we went straight to the “antipasti” which translates to “before the meal”. We were served very thin, salty slices of Prosciutto di Parma which is Italian cured meat made in the area of Parma.

After the appetizer, we went to the first course or the “primi”. For the first course, I chose a simple risotto of fish and peas. By that time, the wine was starting to work on both of us. She candidly asked me from what region of Italy the risotto originated from, and being well-versed with my Italian culinary history, I automatically said that the region of Veneto is credited for the risotto.

For the second course or the “secondi”, we had a “Bistecca alla Fiorentina”, a large t-bone steak that big enough to be shared between the both of us. As we went deeper into our meal, she finally confided on me about how she did not know that such upscale Italian restaurants existed. She, like everyone else, thought that Italian cuisine is just confined to a paninoteca which serves delicious paninis or Italian sandwiches and pizzerias that sold all kinds of pizzas to your heart’s content.  I explained to her that Italian dining is very diverse, it can be very informal as in eating in a local spaghetteria in Napoli or dining in an upscale ristorante in Venezia.

Finally, we got to our first desert which is called “formaggio e frutta” or cheese and fruits, a typical Italian pairing. After that we had our dessert which is called “dolce”. For that we had a genuine Italian tiramisu. After that we had the caffé or coffee. For that we had a demitasse of perfect Italian espresso which was enough to jolt our systems that were becoming quite slow because of eating that much food. It was a wonderful first date of the many that came after it.

But, maybe you’re the type that might get excited about planning a Bond fantasy like this. Get excited about the challenge of it all and not get turned off by having to push this fantasy through. Now here’s the best part.

Once you do get the woman who wants to go with you, and you arrange the cash, the airline, the hotel, the passport, and the week off from work, and other things you’ll need to do before you get anywhere near that waterfall, the fantasy will start to descend on you, start to envelope you.

And when you get to that waterfall with her, you’ll look around at the beautiful scenery, see and feel the falls, and see and feel the girl, right then, all those arrangements you worked hard on will disappear from your mind. You will suddenly be enveloped into the fantasy. You will look around with unbelievable fascination and the thought, “Wow, this is really happening. I’m in the middle of the Dr. No movie.”

When you create a wonderful fantasy like that, you should just enjoy it without destructive thoughts of, “But does this woman really like me, or is she only here for the free trip? And hell, this will be over in a couple of days and I’ll be back at work. Oh, think of that big credit card bill I’m going to have. And my friends will laugh at me when they hear how much I paid to pull this off.”

Hey man, Mr. Field Agent man. I won’t laugh at you. And your friends that are following their dreams won’t laugh at you. And the ones that aren’t? Well, don’t even bother to tell those guys, ’cause they wouldn’t understand anyway. Besides, you’ll be too busy planning your next fantasy. And you know what? You won’t even bother to wait for the results of the next lottery, because you’ll trust yourself to pull off your dreams, goals, fantasies, and accomplishments, more than those tickets in your pocket.

Now About That Bond Girl For The Waterfall Perhaps she’s a little harder to arrange than the airline tickets, but here’s a little trick that might help you. It has to do with the idea that “need breaks iron.”

Here’s a great case in point:

In Japan, on Christmas Eve, it’s the custom for a guy to take his girl to a fancy dinner, give her an expensive gift, and then take her to a fancy hotel. Because of this custom hotels offer special packages for a room and dinner for young couples. These hotels sell out by early November. One college guy I know reserved the room early for him and his girlfriend.

He had everything set up perfectly. That is, until she broke up with him. He was, of course, broken hearted. It was December 5th, but he could have canceled the hotel package and gotten most of his money back. However, he decided to not cancel.

He decided to hold the room and dinner, go for broke, and find another girl to take there. So now he’s twenty days and counting………… You’ll notice that in most 007 movies Bond is facing a countdown. A deadline. That’s when he gets tough and gets down to business. And that is what makes the difference between people that are successful and in control of their lives, and ones that let circumstances control them.

Everyone has some natural talent in some field, but can they call up their talent at will? Can they produce on a deadline? Some people, when you squeeze them, they fold. Others focus.

That’s what Bond does. He focuses. And that need for him to survive breaks all barriers that are blocking him. Likewise, the guy with the Christmas hotel package and no date, rose to the challenge of the deadline.

He quickly found a new girl who was thrilled to go with him. And as Sinatra sings, “Ever since that night, they’ve been together.” (Going on two years now.)

Lesson learned: When you have a deadline, be like Bond. Call up your talent and deliver. When you’re squeezed, focus. And do this by saying to yourself “Need breaks iron.”

Connery became an international superstar and the measuring stick for every subsequent actor who has taken on the part. The five additional players to grace the role of Bond to date are: Australia’s own George Lazenby (who only portrayed him once before bowing out), Roger Moore (seven films), Timothy Dalton (two), Pierce Brosnan (five) and now Daniel Craig (one and counting). Ian Fleming once stated that Cary Grant was his ideal actor for the role (and Alfred Hitchcock was once almost the series’ first director), and initially Fleming expressed disdain at the casting of Connery. He later admitted, though, that Connery had won him over completely with his portrayal of the British agent. However, it appears that the real force behind the glamorous screen image of Bond, or “Mr. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang” as an Italian journalist once dubbed him, was the original director of the series, Terrence Young, who helmed three out of the first four films, including Dr. No (1962), From Russia With Love (1963) and Thunderball (1965).

Young took the thirty-one-year-old, rough-edged Connery (who was from a working class Scottish family) and taught him how to be more debonair-fashioned largely on Young’s own tastes and ladies’ man lifestyle. He even took Connery to his own personal tailor and suggested he actually sleep in his expensive new suit to help him get a good feel for the clothes. The internationally savvy Young, who was British but had been born in Shanghai, was also known for his “casual elegance” and a “tongue-in-cheek” sense of humor, both of which became quintessential Bond trademarks. In fact, Dr. No became the prototype for all future Bond films, and one would have to give Young much of the credit for why 007 became such an on-screen icon (which is not meant as a slight to Fleming-he did invent Bond, after all). Young just fleshed out the secret agent with a perfect blend of humor and style.

British writer Ian Fleming died at the relatively young age of fifty-six on August 12, 1964. However, he left us a legacy that is still very much alive-the James Bond franchise. Undoubtedly the most popular fictional character ever to emerge out of the British Isles (with a nod to Sherlock Holmes), Bond is largely known as the focus of a series of blockbuster movies, but he originally appeared in a number of novels with the very same intriguing titles as many of their celluloid counterparts (though they sometimes stray far from Fleming’s original stories): Casino Royale, Live and Let Die, Doctor No and Goldfinger, to name a few.

Similar to the written tales, the James Bond films have always been a triumph of style over substance, as Bond’s frequent black tie attire would seem to attest. Bond, a.k.a. Agent 007, will never win any humanitarian awards for his brand of public service-which in many ways is part of his charm. He isn’t bound by the usual rules of civilized society. In fact, as a member of the British Secret Service, he officially carries a “License to Kill.” He also drives only the sportiest of cars (e.g. the Aston Martin DB5), dresses impeccably, enjoys “a certain way with the ladies,” and-perhaps most importantly-boasts an uncanny knack for getting himself into and out of harm’s way. Bond breathes that rarefied air most of us can only dream about; he is above the law and beyond reproach (despite the occasional scolding from his boss, M)

The best Bond films tend to stick to the formula their built-in audience expects, without feeling too formulaic. They typically include the following elements:

• A catchy theme song sung in a sultry voice;

• exotic international locations spanning the globe, from Jamaica to Morocco to Japan;

•lengthy underwater, airborne or snowbound action sequences (or all three);

• dynamic car or boat chases (usually both);

• casino gambling (he prefers baccarat and likes to introduce himself at the table as “Bond, James Bond”);

• the latest in tricky spy gadgets, a majority of them quite deadly, “loaned out” to him with impatience by a man in a white lab coat known only as Q (or R);

• the drinking of tasteful alcohol (insisting that his vodka martini be “shaken, not stirred”);

•ultra-enticing women, often with outlandishly suggestive names like Honey Ryder or Pussy Galore;

• and, of course, megalomaniacal villains who can’t kill Bond unless it involves an elaborate, time-wasting method that gives the hero time to miraculously finagle his way out of it (not unlike Batman in the sixties TV series). Each main villain typically has a more psychotic and dangerous henchman, preferably with a memorable nickname like Oddjob or Jaws, who does the dirty work and nearly gets the better of Bond, always to nail-biting effect.
